Last week the Fire Brigades Union passed a motion to change its rules so that it can financially support candidates opposing the Labour Party. In future, the FBU will support only those candidates who back ?the policies and principles of the union?. Brilliant. This is great news.

The London borough of Hackney has been in crisis ever since the formation of the Labour-Tory coalition - massive cuts, occupations, demonstrations, strikes and prosecutions for huge electoral fraud. If the left were to unite an immediate breakthrough is possible. Unfortunately - though part of the Socialist Alliance - the Socialist Party in England and Wales insists on pursuing its own narrow interests.
