Discontent

Robbie Rix reports on the Weekly Worker fighting fund

There has, of course, been much talk about a ‘summer of discontent’ in the UK and unfortunately, as comrades know, we had our own reasons for ‘discontent’ during the last full month of summer, when we failed to reach our £2,250 fighting fund target for August by no less than £378.

So now, having completed our two-week summer break last month, we must get back to winning ways! We need not only to reach that target in September, but substantially eat into the August deficit too!

So far things have been pretty typical for the start of the month, when we receive a large proportion of comrades’ monthly standing orders, which means that after seven days we have £509 in the kitty. Mind you, most of those SOs are for moderate amounts, but one or two of the contributions we’ve just received are rather more substantial.

For example, we received another of Irish comrade AM’s bank transfers - this time for £67 - plus £60 from AC and £55 from EW. Then there was BO, who contributed £35, while both comrades ST and CG chipped in with £30, and we received £25 from GD, plus £20 each from BK and MS. Another 16 comrades donated less than £20, including our only PayPal contributor this week - comrade MH (£10). Finally there was that diehard supporter of the Weekly Worker, comrade Hassan, who handed over his usual tenner to one of our team.

Not a bad start to the month. But now we need to not only keep up the pace, but increase it by quite a bit! Please do your best to help us out - by bank transfer (account name ‘Weekly Worker’, sort code 30-99-64, account number 00744310), PayPal via our website or - yes - we even accept cheques!

Returning to what will shortly no doubt be an ‘autumn of discontent’, let me remind readers that the two-day strike by CWU postal workers will delay delivery of the paper to our subscribers this week. The Weekly Worker stands fully behind the postal workers, of course, and all others who are struggling to defend their wages in order to make ends meet. We wish them a speedy victory.
