Shortfall

Robbie Rix reports on the Weekly Worker fighting fund

Unfortunately, the Weekly Worker fell some way short of achieving our £2,250 target for our August fighting fund. In fact we didn’t even reach £2K, as we ended the month with exactly £1,872 contributed by our readers and supporters.

Of course, this was connected to the fact that there was no Weekly Worker in the second half of the month because of our usual two-week summer break. So that meant that not only was there no income from sales, but that we didn’t receive any accompanying donations - particularly from readers renewing their subscription.

You might think that we also saved money because there were no production costs either. True, but if you take printing costs, we actually pay our printers through a monthly standing order, irrespective of which month it is (the annual total is divided into 12 equal payments). In other words, we need the cash every month, including during August and December, when we don’t publish every week! In fact, over the last two weeks of August our fighting fund total increased by £1,131, but the problem was that we had fallen a bit behind before that, particularly in the second week of the month.

But let’s not carp too much. We shouldn’t forget the huge commitment and dedication shown by so many of our readers. Amongst that £1,131 were three-figure standing orders from SK, KB and PM, plus other SOs or bank transfers from GB (£85), MM (£75), PB (£60), JT and PM (£50). There were also two £50 PayPal donations from regular contributors RL and DB, together with a number of smaller amounts. Thanks to everyone for your support!

Anyway, now we’re in September, let’s see if we can make up for the August shortfall. I’m confident we can do that - especially now that I’m back nagging you every week once again! Please help us out if you can.
