ON NOVEMBER 16 1986 Satpal Ram was attacked in Birmingham. One of the gang of attackers broke a glass and stabbed Satpal in the face. After being stabbed twice, Satpal took out a small knife and tried to warn off his attacker, who assaulted him again. In fear of his life Satpal stabbed him in self-defence. The attacker died.
Satpal’s trial was a total farce. He was found guilty of murder and it has taken over eight years to force an appeal.
The campaign is well aware that an appeal does not guarantee victory. It is solidarity action which forces the authorities to take notice. The campaign is therefore asking for support from all working class organisations in publicising and supporting Satpal’s case.
Self-defence against racist, chauvinist or police attack must be a right that the whole of the working class fights for.
