Ipswich Socialist Alliance held a public meeting this week as the build-up to the general election gathered momentum.
Ipswich SA has already pulled in some disaffected Labour members and non-affiliated leftwingers and the idea of the rally was to cement ties with these people and encourage others to get involved.
So far the bulk of leafleting and contact work, which got underway last month, has been carried out by the Socialist Workers Party and the Socialist Party, which appear to be collaborating more effectively than elsewhere. Activists have already leafleted areas in the centre of town and on the massive Chantry estate. The alliance also holds weekly organisation meetings open to all activists.
Ipswich has traditionally been an embattled Labour possession in a sea of blue made up by rural Suffolk and Norfolk.
With another Labour landslide expected, there is every possibility that many workers will consider switching to the SA without any fear of 'letting in the Tory'.
