Political Coventry

Coventry branch of the Socialist Labour Party has well attended, regular branch meetings. Given that the members come from all sorts of different left backgrounds, the discussions are always lively, but comradely - which is of course a great step forward for the left in Britain.

Meetings begin with a political discussion every month. Already the branch has had speakers on the Palestinian question, on Ireland and electoralism. It has also been involved in discussions in the Socialist Alliance. The branch hopes to start daytime political discussions as well for people who work shifts and pensioners, etc. Committee meetings are open and visitors are welcome.

Coventry branch is still in the process of formation, given that it is made up of a group of disparate individuals. The formation of the SLP as yet has not seen a big breakaway from the Labour Party, but the coming together of individuals of the left. The West Midlands as yet lacks a regional committee which would strengthen SLP activity in the area.

Nevertheless the SLP in Coventry has been involved in the campaign against the Jobseekers Allowance. CPSA workers were on strike on Monday and Tuesday over the demand for screens in the light of the anger that will erupt as a result of the JSA. The branch also hopes to set up a university branch after having a stall at the Fresher’s Fair in Warwick.

Preparations for the general election are of course beginning. Dave Spencer, ex-Labour Party county councillor, will be standing for the SLP in Coventry North.
