Trust the workers

From the Workers’ Weekly, paper of the Communist Party of Great Britain, October 1 1926

What lessons must be learnt from the government’s open adoption of the full coalowners’ programme?

First The Communist Party was right when it warned the workers, months ago, that the Tory government is the executive committee of the capitalist class.

Second The prime responsibility for the present difficult situation of the miners falls entirely with the General Council and the leaders of the Labour Party.

Third Faced with a coalition of enemies, that begins with the Duke of Northumberland and stretches through Baldwin, Hodges and Bromley to the General Council and the Labour Party executive, the miners’ executive made serious tactical mistakes in trusting one section to fight another, instead of putting its whole trust in the workers.

Fourth Just because it was the treachery of the General Council and the Labour Party leaders which let down the miners - and not any weakness on the part of the workers - the time has not gone to correct the mistakes and change the whole position by an appeal to the workers over the heads of the treacherous leaders.

The Communist Party’s lead from the beginning of the dispute has been proved right to the hilt. The Communist Party stands out as the only fighting leader of the workers. Follow its lead today and win victory for the miners and defeat for the bosses!
