Earlier this week the government overturned a House of Lords amendment to its Asylum Bill. It used its majority in the Commons to reject their lordships’ ‘humane’ proposals to give refugees three days to claim asylum after entering Britain. They must apply immediately on entering, even if they cannot speak English and do not know of this condition. Peter Lilley, social security secretary, claimed the amendment would have cost £80m in benefit claims.
Our wise rulers want to give refugees a simple choice: go back to the fate that awaits you in your own country or starve to death here.
