Steve Cooke reports the latest from the Hands Off People of Iran campaign

A variety of elected politicians are amongst the latest to sign up to the declaration of the Hands Off the People of Iran campaign - against imperialist threats, against the theocratic regime.

These include John Dallat, SDLP deputy speaker of the Northern Ireland assembly, and Sinn F?in assembly member Daith? McKay. Among Labour signatories are Elaine Smith MSP and London assembly AM Jennette Arnold. Plaid Cymru is represented by Adam Price MP and assembly members Helen Mary Jones and Rhodri Glyn Thomas. The co-convener of the Scottish Green Party, Robin Harper MSP, has added his name, as has Swedish Left Party MEP Jens Holm.

Among environmental activists who have signed up are physician and writer Dr Helen Caldicott and professor Joel Kovel, editor of Capitalism Nature Socialism. US anti-war dissident Noam Chomsky is a new signatory, while singer-songwriters Michelle Shocked and Kathryn Williams have also become Hopi supporters.

Amongst the dozen or so prominent academics to have come out for the declaration over the last week are sociologist Sheila Rowbotham (University of Manchester) and legal scholar Bill Bowring (Birkbeck College).
